Listed Building Rear Extension London

This early Victorian townhouse was listed in 1972 and retains many of its original architectural features. Over time, however, a series of poorly considered rear additions had compromised the clarity and character of the building, resulting in a fragmented relationship between the home and the garden.

The project involved the careful removal and rationalisation of these additions, replaced with a modest contemporary extension to the rear. Developed in conversation with the local authority and a specialist heritage consultant, the proposal sought to improve the functionality of the ground floor while respecting the architectural integrity of the listed building.

The new addition is deliberately restrained in form and materiality, with an emphasis on proportion, light and legibility. Its clean lines and measured scale provide a clear distinction between old and new, while echoing the rhythm and logic of the original structure. Large openings reconnect the principal living spaces with the garden, introducing daylight deep into the plan and establishing a more coherent spatial sequence, between front and back.

The result is a quietly restrained and timeless intervention that enhances the everyday use of the home while preserving the significance of the early Victorian Architecture.
