The Gateway to the Al Wathba Reserve, Abu Dhabi

Architectural Drawing Isometric

The scheme derives from deconstructing and distilling a complex Islamic pattern to a series of simple geometric shapes as a polarity to the complex architecture of modern Abu Dhabi. The scheme embraces the simple geometric shapes to allow the user to reflect on life and the beauty of nature. The design aims to create a calm architecture and an environmental contrast to downtown Abu Dhabi. Yet it still embraces the Islamic principle of the greatness of creation by focusing the visitors toward the ecosystem and avifauna beyond the confines of the building.

The circular pool is the heart of the project with rectilinear rooms arranged around it.The circular shaped pool is in references the infinite qualities of creation and nature, extending outwards taking visitors into the wetlands through a network of boardwalks.

The project forms the gateway point to a wider masterplan for the reserve as a whole.

This project was designed in collaboration with the Architects Oli Mould and Charlie Kenntish.
